Tiny marks · real changes

The clues beside the kana.

You do not need another alphabet. These three small patterns simply help familiar kana make more sounds.

Two marks add a voice.

Dakuten turns K into G, S into Z, T into D, and H into B.

か ka → が ga · さ sa → ざ za

One circle makes a pop.

Handakuten turns the H row into the P sounds. It appears only with this one family.

は ha → ぱ pa · ほ ho → ぽ po
きゃ

A small kana blends in.

Small ゃ, ゅ, or ょ joins an I-column kana and the two shapes become one syllable.

き ki + ゃ ya → きゃ kya

Hiragana holds the sentence around the word.

Particles, endings, and many native words appear here: これは ねこ です。

Katakana often welcomes a word from elsewhere.

Many borrowed words and foreign names arrive here: コーヒー means coffee.
