Here’s the secret that makes Japanese click. English shows a word’s job with word order (“dog bites man”). Japanese clips a tiny particle onto each word like a job badge — so the order can relax, because every word already says what it’s doing. The badge always comes after the word it tags.
watashi wa pan o tabemasu — “As for me, I eat bread.” Read the badges, not the order. (Costume reminder: は = “wa”, へ = “e”, を = “o” on particle duty.)

Badge 1 · は (wa)
は is the most common badge of all. It lifts a word up and says: “this is what I’m talking about.” Then you finish with です — the pattern you already know.
［ X ］は ［ Y ］です。 — “As for X, it is Y.” / “X is Y.”
⤷ は has a quiet sibling, が (subject) — they divide the work in subtle ways. We’ll give が its own badge soon; for now, は + です carries you a very long way.
Badge 2 · の (no)
の clips two nouns together. The owner or describer comes first, then の, then the thing: A の B = “B of A” / “A’s B.”
“わたしの なまえは マリナです — and now I can say whose ice cream this is. わたしの！ 🍦” — Marina
Badges 3–6 · を · に · へ · で
These four do the heavy lifting in everyday sentences. The classic confusion is に vs で — keep one question in mind: is it a destination, or where the action happens?
へ (e) = “toward”, almost interchangeable with に for going somewhere.
Kanji Story Cards · No. 4 & 5
Some kanji go down easiest with cake. 🍰 大 (big) and 小 (small) are a matched pair — and nothing shows the difference like a cake: whole, or sliced into little pieces.
Dai — the Whole Cake
Big · large · great
Picture a whole celebration cake in the middle of the table — round, generous, big enough for everyone. Cut it in half and there’s still plenty to share. 大 is bigness as warmth and abundance.

Shō — the Little Slices
Small · little
Now cut that cake into many small slices — a central line with two little pieces falling away on each side. Each slice is small, neat, and just enough. 小 is smallness made cosy.

Everyone gets lost. One question + three direction words gets you home. Watch Tsuki pick the wrong badge first.
